Sony XPRI Editor
XPRI is used for a range of applications, from SD offline to HD on-line. It
is ideal as an SD and HD replacement for Avid Symphony. It conforms OMF and EDL
lists from offline systems. It provides a complete set of finishing tools. It
offers unique features such as multi-cam. XPRI has cost effective storage.
Also, working and storing in standard definition native compressed MPEG IMX provides
online resolution and 1/3 the space compared to uncompressed standard definition.
Working and storing in native HDCAM compressed format provides online HD resolution at
1/7th the space of uncompressed 8-bit HD. The SDTI interface provides lossless
transfer. Working in the compressed native domain means that multiple projects can
be saved on one system at the same time. Sony also owns this codec technology
(hardware and software versions). XPRI supports 4 seats of SAN, and will support 8
seats in new version 7 software (version 6 is the current software as of now). The media
is always available at on-line resolution over the SAN, and open media and project sharing
are supported. Everyone on the SAN gets 2 streams plus key. XML transfer is
also supported. There are over 100 real time effects that are supported in SD or HD.
OMFI multi-layer EDL import/export with audio data is supported. Integration
with Adobe After Effects is supported, as is network rendering. XPRI has both
primary and secondary chroma and luma keys, supports multiple RT (real time) effects on
each clip, and supports import of EDL from Avid, FCP, Vegas, and export to Pro Tools.

Panasonic at NAB 2004
New Panasonic P2 Static Memory Products:
Back in NAB 2003, Panasonic offered a revolutionary new SD memory card product family for
broadcast news television networks, related news organizations, or even production
applications that currently are working with existing videotape or computer hard drive
recording methodologies. The new category of Panasonic Media for SD memory card
products is called P2. There will be various P2 format cameras, P2
format playback devices (some that look like traditional VTRs), and of course, the new P2
media itself. This means that, similar to digital still cameras, a P2
"video" camera can be made with no moving parts to it, except for a filter
wheel, or something a user might want to have to control a menu or audio input level.
Standard definition cameras and related media docking units are planned initially.
As reusable media costs drop, high definition may be offered.
Each Panasonic P2 media memory card uses a PCMCIA form factor and incorporates
four SD memory cards on it with an integrated circuit IC controller to manage the data
write and read within the card. For example, the AJ-P2C004 4GB P2 card provides 16
minutes of DVCPRO 25 Mb/s record capability, in the .MXF file format (to insure IT
compatibility) and an 8 minute record capacity of DVCPRO50 (with video, audio, and
metadata, also in the .MXF file format). These amounts would double with a 16GB P2
card set of five.
The idea is to remove the P2 media from the camera, and insert it into a P2 media dock or
P2 transfer device (some may even be manufactured to look and behave like a VTR) and copy
the content over to a media server or other storage device. Once the PC2 card is
connected to the IT path, it can be instantly recognized as a mounted virtual disk drive.
Therefore, this copy process can be rapid, and the P2 media is then to be
reinserted back in the camera for reuse.
P2 cards are said to be re-useable up to 100,000 times. Higher capacity P2 cards will be
available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB and beyond, in the future.
